Independant Sailing

Join our Independent Sailing Program!

The goal of our Independent Sailing Program is to allow sailors to develop the skills and gain the experience to sail independently with confidence, while minimizing the impact of their disability out on the water.

Through our Independent Sailing Programs, DSA Alberta Members can:

  • Learn to sail from Canadian Yachting Association (CYA) certified instructors
  • Sail any time with a qualified Sailing Companion
  • Participate in DSA-Alberta social functions and receive the AHOY! newsletter
  • Participate in weekly racing and regattas

CYA Learn-to-Sail Program

Our CYA (Canadian Yachting Association) Learn-to-Sail classes provide theory instruction, technical skills training, social activity and confidence building in a safe, positive and cooperative learning environment. Classes are offered at all levels and open to anyone (members, families, volunteers). Courses are typically eight, three-hour lessons on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:00 - 9:00 p.m., or some are a weekend format. Learn-to-Sail Fees vary from $190 per course to $269 for our four-day camps. Contact the Business Manager to register for a Learn-to-Sail course now!

Wednesday Night Racing and Regattas

A goal of DSA-Alberta is “to facilitate integration of disabled and able-bodied recreation and competition”. DSA-Alberta sailors are welcome to participate in Wednesday Night Racing every Wednesday from May through August at 6:00 p.m., as well as a number of regattas during the summer. DSA-Alberta sailors and volunteers can book a Martin 16 or the Sonar for these events. Join our Independent Sailing Program!

“The volunteers, donors, and staff of DSA-Alberta have been instrumental in my development and
success as a sailor and racer. From the staff and volunteers who ensure that the boats are in
fine working order, to the donors and sponsors who enable the availability of the adaptive
equipment, DSA-Alberta positively impacts my life on a daily basis. The coaching support and
guidance on racing rules and strategy as well as at weekly races and yearly regatta’s is also
immeasurable. Thank you DSA-Alberta volunteers, donors and staff – if it weren’t for your
continued support and encouragement, I wouldn’t be able to say “gone sailing for the day” or
“going racing for the week.” Sara Cooper
